Sarah began writing poetry in 1990 with the encouragement of her first cousin, the late Carl P. Morton, Poet Laureate of Alabama, 1984-1987, and joined ASPS the same year. She served on the Registration Committee for the National Federation of the State Poetry Societies Convention when it was held in Birmingham and has been on the ASPS Board several terms. She has won numerous awards for her poetry from the Alabama State Poetry Society and The Birmingham Quill Club. Her poetry has been published in several journals. She won the New Dawn Unlimited Chapbook Contest for "Poems from the Mission House: A Cup of Hope and A Bag of Love" based on her volunteer work at a Birmingham food bank. Since publication in July 2007, it has sold more than 150 copies with proceeds going to the work of the mission.
